Guruprakash Ayurvedic Centre was founded by Guru, Guruprakash (Ebraham Vaidyan) in 1899 at Kovalam, an internationally famed tourist destination in Kerala, India. His followers were Joseph Vaidyan, Daniel Vaidyan, Hendry Vaidyan and Stuvert Vaidyan. Daniel Vaidyan was a friend and co-worker of Sree Narayana Guru, a great social reformer of Kerala. They both held consultation with people and gave them treatment at a place in Kunnumpuram, near Kovalam. At present, the fifth generation member, Shri D. H. Stuvert Vaidyan, who is the Managing Director of the Centre, oversees the functioning of the hospital. Dr. Pushpa Stuvert and Dr. Raja Ratnam are the Chief consulting doctors, here.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT-VAMANA
The kapha toxins accumulated in the body and the respiratory tract are effectively removed by Vamana, one of the five therapies of Panchakarma in Ayurveda. Vamana is therapeutic vomiting, which is a medicated emesis therapy. People with high imbalance of kapha are given this type of treatment, which loosens and mobilizes the toxins, in an effort to eliminate them from the body. Waste products (vitiated dosha) are eliminated through the upper gastrointestinal tract. The vitiated kapha are eliminated through the mouth. After vomiting, the sinus is cleared, which in turn provides relief from congestion, wheezing and breathlessness.
Indications- skin diseases, Insanity, Elephantiasis, Asthma.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT-VIRECHANA
This is the excretion of Doshas through the anus by the administration of laxatives and purgatives. This is a specific process for elimination of Pitta-dosha. Virechana is a purificaton treatment and it cleanses the small intestine and the organs, which are Pitta dominant. It is the method of cleaning and evacuation of the bowels through the use of purgative medicines. The treatment concentrates on the toxins that are accumulated in the liver and gall bladder.
Indications- Skin diseases, Garlic components, Intestinal worms.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT-VASTHI
This is the purifying process in which suitable medicated decoction mixed with honey, salt, oil and a paste of certain drugs or medicated oil alone is filled into a bladder and pushed up into the anus through a nozzle. It is called kashaya-vasti when an admixture of decoction and other drugs is used and Anuwasana-vasti or Sneha-vasti when medicated oil alone is used. The term Uttara- vasti refers to the administration of drugs through the penis or vagina. This is a delicate process, done with extreme care after taking all necessary precautions. This is the best treatment for vitiation of Vata.
Indications- Arthritis, Neurological problem, Low back ache, Infertility, complaints of alimentary system.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT-NASYA
It involves administration of medicines through the nostrils and is specifically indicated for treatment of the diseases of the head. Therapeutic administration of medicated oils or herbal juices (prepared in the form of nasal drops) through nostrils is termed as Nasyam.This is one of the Pancha karma procedure for detoxification. Nasyam is advised either in the morning on an empty stomach or in the evening. During the sessions of Nasyam, shower (bathing of head), exposure to sunlight and dust should be avoided.
Indication - facial paralysis, sinusitis,migraine, Cervical spondylosis and arthritis. Duration-15 to 20 minutes to complete the procedure.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT-RAKTA-MOSHANA
The process of taking out blood from the body is known as Rektamoksha or blood letting. This technique is adopted in instances of impure blood for managing diseases caused by Rakta and Pitta. This is done either by cutting the Vessels by sharp instruments or application of leeches or by suction with the help of horn etc. It is to be noted that "Snehana" and "Swedana" which go by the name of Purvakarma are the necessary precedents of any of "Panchakarma".

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT- SNEHAPANAM
This the treatment for peptic ulcer also involves sneha panam. Overproduction of gastric juice in the digestive track is neutralized by medicated ghee. The choice of medicines varies with patients. The general treatment is that the patient is given a dose of snehapan of specific quantity and quality, based on the ability of the person to digest the medication. The person is also not allowed to eat anything till the medicinal ghee digests completely in his/her digestive tract. Snehapana therapy for peptic ulcer may end in less than eight days.
Indication - Osteoarthritis, Leukaemia, Rhuematic Arthritis, Chronic Peptic Ulcer, etc.

MEDITATION & YOGA
Ayurveda is not merely a system of treatment. It is a way of life. In order to sustain the effects of the treatment, the centre also conducts classes in yoga and meditation so as to help the patients to have control over body and mind.
